The title, The Fifth Plinth: A Literary Journal, emanated from two minds: one clever, the other faulty though somewhat poetic.
Two English instructors sat discussing possible titles for the new literary journal for Alvin College. One suggested using "The Fourth Plinth" as the title. She had recently been to London and learned an interesting tidbit about its history:
“Located in Trafalgar Square, the Fourth Plinth was built in 1841 and was meant to hold a statue of William IV but, due to insufficient funds, remained empty. Over 150 years later, the Fourth Plinth now hosts a series of commissioned artworks by world class artists and is the most talked about contemporary art prize in the UK.”
The first instructor suggested that a literary journal is somewhat analogous to the plinth in London, each rotating unique works to share with the public. The second instructor loved the idea, but instead of saving the title in a memo on her phone (greater chance of recovery), she jotted it down on a Post-It. Several months later, when a decision was to be made, the Post-It was nowhere to be found. Plinth was easily remembered, but apparently "fifth plinth" rolled off her tongue much nicer than "fourth plinth."
When discussing the title later with the first instructor, the second instructor was informed of the discrepancy. After much laughter, the instructors determined that this new journal should have a unique name.
The original goal of The Fifth Plinth was to promote the creative and scholarly work at Alvin Community College and from within its local community. Now, with the second edition, we hope to expand beyond the local community.
